Welcome to Harajuku, the birthplace of Tokyo’s modern youth culture, where fashion rebels, foodies, and culture lovers come together in a whirlwind of creativity and self-expression! Harajuku is a playground for the bold, the curious, and anyone who loves a little bit of magic mixed with their adventure.
Imagine strolling down Takeshita Street, where neon-coloured outfits, oversized bows, and platform shoes are just another Tuesday. One moment, you’re admiring kawaii (cute) accessories and limited-edition sneakers, and the next, you’re sinking your teeth into a whipped-cream-loaded crepe or a rainbow cloud of candy floss bigger than your head.
It’s a place where trends are born, boundaries are pushed, and every street corner offers something new and exciting.
Harajuku has a quieter side too.
It’s home to Meiji Jingu Shrine, a peaceful, forested sanctuary where you can escape Tokyo’s fast pace and soak in the beauty of Japanese tradition. Just a short walk away, Omotesando Avenue welcomes you with its luxury boutiques, stunning modern architecture, and stylish cafés that wouldn’t feel out of place in Paris or Milan.
Harajuku is also just a five-minute walk from Yoyogi Park, one of Tokyo’s largest and most beloved green spaces. This sprawling park is a haven for joggers, picnickers, street performers, and nature lovers, offering vast lawns, tranquil ponds, and winding walking paths. It’s a year-round favourite, transforming with the seasons, lush and vibrant in summer, golden and crisp in autumn, and crisp, clear and sunny in winter.
Visiting Japan? Put Harajuku on the top of your list. From shopping and dining to capturing stunning Instagram shots or soaking in its one-of-a-kind atmosphere, this colourful district offers an unforgettable experience. It’s fun, it’s weird, it’s delicious, and it’s waiting for you to explore! So, grab your camera, and get ready to fall in love with one of Tokyo’s most exciting neighbourhoods. Harajuku is calling, are you ready to answer? 🎀✨🎡
In our fun and entertaining neighbourhood guide, we share some of the best spots you shouldn’t miss:
History of Harajuku: From Samurai Roots to Street Style Capital
Long before it became the epicentre of kawaii culture, punk fashion, and trendsetting streetwear, Harajuku was a resting stop on the Kamakura Kaido, the old road to Kamakura, as far back as the medieval period. By the Edo period (1603 to 1868) the area was a quiet mix of fields, temples and samurai residences on the edge of the city.
The name Harajuku (原宿) and the village of Onden
The name “Harajuku” (原宿) roughly translates to “meadow lodging”, a nod to its early days as a resting place surrounded by lush greenery. Some also associate it with Ura-Harajuku (裏原宿 or “Ura-Hara”), referring to the backstreets of Harajuku, where indie brands and underground fashion movements thrive.
Right next door lay Onden (穏田), a small farming village whose name is usually translated as “calm rice fields”. Onden and Harajuku were separate villages, and the name Harajuku, meaning “meadow lodging” or “inn in the fields”, comes from the area’s long history as a stopping place for travellers on the Kamakura Kaido.
Harajuku after 1945: US military housing and street fashion
Fast forward to the 20th century, and Harajuku evolved into a cultural melting pot. After World War II, nearby U.S. military housing brought an influx of Western fashion and music, influencing the area’s growing youth scene. By the 1970s and ‘80s, Harajuku had become Tokyo’s hub for experimental fashion, subcultures, and artistic rebellion, where creative minds could freely express themselves without limits.
Takeshita Street became ground zero for Japanese street fashion, launching global trends like Lolita, Decora, and Visual Kei, while Omotesando blossomed into an upscale shopping district, earning its nickname as Tokyo’s Champs-Élysées.
Today, Harajuku remains a symbol of self-expression, creativity, and cultural fusion, standing out among Tokyo’s neighbourhoods as the ultimate playground for the bold and the curious. Whether you’re hunting for unique fashion, quirky snacks, or just soaking in the electric energy, Harajuku continues to be one of the city’s most dynamic and must-visit destinations!
Jingumae, the official address name for Harajuku
Harajuku is also called Jingumae (神宮前) because of its close proximity to Meiji Jingu Shrine (明治神宮), one of Tokyo’s most famous and historically significant Shinto shrines. The name Jingumae literally means “in front of the shrine”, referring to its location near the grand entrance of Meiji Jingu.
While “Harajuku” is the more commonly used and globally recognised name, especially in fashion and pop culture, Jingumae is the official district name within Shibuya Ward. You’ll often see it on addresses, property listings, and official maps, while Harajuku is more of a cultural nickname that embodies the area’s unique street style, youth culture, and trendsetting vibe.
Getting to Harajuku
Reaching Harajuku is as easy as hopping on Tokyo’s ultra-efficient (and sometimes delightfully quirky) public transport! 🚋✨
JR Yamanote Line: This is the fastest and easiest way, just hop on the iconic green loop line and jump off at Harajuku Station. The moment you step out, you’re right in the heart of the action, with Takeshita Street just a few steps away!
Tokyo Metro: Take the Chiyoda Line (C) or Fukutoshin Line (F) to Meiji-Jingumae Station, which is basically Harajuku’s cool underground entrance. Perfect if you’re heading towards Omotesando or Meiji Shrine first!
By Bus: If you’re feeling adventurous, Tokyo’s buses are a fun (and scenic) way to arrive! Just look for a Toei or Keio bus heading towards Harajuku-eki-mae and enjoy the ride.
By Walking from Shibuya: Feeling extra energetic? Take a leisurely 15-minute stroll from Shibuya Station, passing through trendy Cat Street for sneaker shops, vintage finds, and hidden gems before arriving in Harajuku!
No matter how you get there, one thing’s for sure, once you arrive, Harajuku’s electric energy will sweep you off your feet!
Meiji Jingu, Takeshita Street, Omotesando and Tokyu Plaza Harakado
Meiji Jingu Shrine
Meiji Jingu Shrine is a sacred Shinto sanctuary dedicated to Emperor Meiji and Empress Shoken, embodying Japan’s deep spiritual heritage and reverence for its imperial history. Nestled within a 70-hectare forest that was planted from 1920 by some 110,000 volunteers with around 100,000 trees donated from across Japan, the shrine is a tranquil oasis in the heart of Tokyo.
As you pass through the towering torii gates at the entrance, you’ll be enveloped in a serene atmosphere, with wide gravel paths leading to the majestic shrine buildings. Visitors can witness traditional Shinto rituals, admire the beautiful architecture, and even participate in customs like writing wishes on wooden ema plaques. Whether you’re seeking a moment of reflection, cultural insight, or simply a peaceful escape from the city’s energetic pace, Meiji Jingu offers a timeless and rejuvenating experience.

Boutique Takenoko
Boutique Takenoko has been trading on Takeshita Street since 1979, which makes it one of the street’s longest-running shops. In the early 1980s its brightly coloured “harem suits” became the uniform of the Takenoko-zoku, the dancing youth tribe that took its name from the shop and made Harajuku famous across Japan.
The boutique still designs and makes its own clothes, and today it is best known for glittering stage costumes, dancewear and cosplay-style outfits worn by idols and performers. Come here for a slice of Harajuku history and an outfit nobody else on the street will be wearing.
