A Warm Welcome After a Long Journey

After a long 5-hour Shinkansen journey from Fukuoka, we arrived in Tokyo feeling a little exhausted but eager to begin our exploration of the city. The high-speed Shinkansen ride was smooth, but the journey had taken its toll, and we were ready for a place to unwind. As soon as we stepped into the Graphy Hotel Shibuya, we were met with a sense of relief. The warm welcome from the staff instantly made us feel at home, and the check-in process was incredibly smooth. There was no rush, no confusion—just a calm and friendly greeting that set the tone for the entire stay.

What really stood out during our check-in was the genuine conversations we had with the staff. They weren’t just quick to hand over keys and direct us to our room—they took the time to chat with us, offering local recommendations, sharing insider tips about the area, and even asking about our journey. These seemingly small gestures made all the difference and went a long way, making us feel relaxed and cared for after a long day of travel.

The thoughtful and personal touch is Graphy Hotel’s USP, and it’s one of the reasons we were so happy we chose this place for our stay in Tokyo.

One of the standout features of the Graphy Hotel Shibuya is its incredible location. The hotel is just a few minutes’ walk from Shibuya Station, one of Tokyo’s busiest transportation hubs, making it easy to explore other parts of the city. It’s also close to popular districts like Aoyama, Omotesando, Harajuku, known for their fashion-forward shopping, trendy cafés, and vibrant street culture.

For those looking to discover the quieter, yet equally captivating areas, the hotel is just around the corner from Daikanyama, an awesome stylish neighbourhood known for its boutique shops, café culture, architecture and peaceful atmosphere.

The central location of Graphy Hotel allows guests to explore Tokyo’s many faces, from the bustling streets of Shibuya to the tranquil pockets of the city. In fact, just a stone’s throw from the hotel, right by the canal and before you reach Hachiman-dori street, you’ll find a charming little green space that comes alive in the spring with beautiful ume blossoms.

Rent a Bike and Explore the Neighbourhoods

For those looking to explore the vibrant neighbourhoods around the hotel, bike rentals are available during the day. This is a fantastic way to experience Tokyo from a different perspective. Riding through the streets of Shibuya, Aoyama, and beyond gives you a unique opportunity to take in the sights and sounds of the city at your own pace.

I highly recommend renting a bike to truly explore the neighbourhood and discover hidden gems that are off the typical tourist path. The hotel offers easy access to bike rentals, making it a great option for travellers looking for a more active way to explore Tokyo.

Happy Hour: A Social Hub for Travellers

One of the highlights of my stay at Graphy Hotel Shibuya was the Happy Hour, held every day from 5:00 PM to 6:00 PM. This is the perfect opportunity to unwind after a busy day of exploring Tokyo and meet fellow travellers from around the world. The hotel’s lounge area provides a laid-back atmosphere to enjoy a refreshing drink while swapping travel stories with new friends.

It’s not just about the drinks, though. The Happy Hour is an integral part of the hotel’s community-driven spirit. With so many guests from all walks of life staying here, it’s a great place to connect with like-minded travellers, share tips, and gain recommendations for exploring Tokyo. It’s a fantastic way to kick off your evening, whether you’re planning to go out for dinner, hit the nightlife spots, or simply relax and unwind.

Additionally, the bar’s ambiance and selection of delicious cocktails, including those fancy Espresso Martinis, extend the hotel’s overall atmosphere of relaxation and connection, making it a great place to start your day or unwind after an exciting one.

The breakfast menu is a delightful mix of savory and sweet options, crafted to cater to all tastes. With a focus on both quality and variety, there’s something for everyone, ensuring every guest finds a dish that hits the spot.

I personally went for the Smoked Bacon and Sausage, a classic breakfast choice that did not disappoint. The savory bacon and sausage, complemented by a fresh vegetable salad, provided the perfect balance of flavours to start my morning. For those with a sweeter palate, the menu also offers indulgent options like Donut French Toast and Eggs Benedict with smoked bacon and sausage. You can also choose from a Power Chicken Salad or a refreshing Açaí Bowl for a lighter, energizing start to the day.

After a long day of sightseeing, returning to a room that feels like a peaceful retreat is essential. Each room is thoughtfully equipped with everything you need to relax and unwind. I had a fantastic time at this hotel. The rooms were modern and clean, with just the right touch of coziness. The private double room I stayed in was on the smaller side, but that’s to be expected in Tokyo, but it was perfectly manageable for two people. The bathrooms were spotless and well-maintained.

There’s a small locker in the room for storing your belongings, and for larger luggage, the hotel offers a typical Japanese service of holding onto your big bags at the lobby during the day, whether it’s before check-in or after checkout.

The beds were incredibly comfortable, and the room had enough space to store small luggage. For those seeking a clean, comfortable, and functional room, the Graphy Hotel exceeds expectations.

The 7th Floor Lounge: A Relaxing Escape

One of the most unique features of Graphy Hotel Shibuya is its 7th-floor lounge, a peaceful retreat away from the hustle and bustle of Tokyo. This lounge offers a great opportunity to meet other guests, making it a social hub for those looking to connect. The space is perfect for unwinding, reading a book or simply enjoying the stunning view of Shibuya from above.

On a sunny day, you can grab a coffee, tea, or drink and relax on the balcony while taking in the vibrant cityscape. With comfortable seating and a calm atmosphere, it’s an ideal spot to recharge between your Tokyo adventures.

The space is open to all guests, and I found it to be an excellent spot to catch up on emails or simply take in the view of Tokyo’s skyline.

The Unique History of the Shibuya Elevated Railway

Image of the now-defunct Namikibashi Station, requiring trains to navigate a tight R160 turn (160m radius) with extra caution. For nearly 90 years, this section became an iconic part of Shibuya’s landscape.
Graphy Hotel Shibuya stands at the heart of a vibrant and ever-evolving part of Tokyo, with a rich history that reflects the city’s rapid transformation. The building’s location carries deep historical significance, particularly in relation to the iconic elevated railway that once ran through the area.

In 1927, the Tokyu Toyoko Line introduced a sharp curve between Shibuya and Daikanyama Stations, which quickly became known as one of the most challenging sections of the entire line. This curve was necessitated by the area’s unique geography and became an unmistakable feature of the Shibuya landscape for nearly 90 years.
In 2013, however, the section of the line between Shibuya and Daikanyama was moved underground, signaling the end of the elevated railway’s presence. By 2018, the elevated tracks had been fully dismantled, making way for the exciting new developments in the neighbourhood. These changes gave rise to key landmarks such as the Shibuya Stream and the Daikanyama Log Road, which have become symbols of the fresh, dynamic culture that now defines this area of Tokyo.

The Graphy Hotel Shibuya was thoughtfully designed to embrace this transformation. The hotel is situated on the site of the former elevated railway and mirrors the historical curve of the railway line in its design. The elements within the hotel are a nod to the past while seamlessly connecting to the present, creating a bridge between the legacy of Shibuya’s industrial past and the cutting-edge urban vibrancy of today.

As you explore the neighbourhood around Graphy Hotel, you’ll notice how the new cultural spaces are flourishing. The area has expanded with additional attractions like the “Hikarie” in Aoyama and “Sakura Stage” in Sakuragaoka, continuing to enrich Shibuya’s charm with new, exciting facets. Guests at Graphy Hotel not only stay in comfort but are surrounded by an ever-evolving history that tells the story of Tokyo’s dynamic growth.
