The best isekai anime take an ordinary person, drop them into another world and let the rules of that world do the storytelling. Some heroes are summoned, some are reincarnated after dying, and a few are dragged into a game they cannot log out of. The word isekai (異世界) simply means “another world” or “different world”. Reincarnation stories (tensei) sit inside the genre too, so you will find both types below, alongside a couple of reverse isekai where the fantasy character lands in our world instead.

Isekai is a subgenre of fantasy in which a protagonist, or a group of characters, is transported from the real world to a fantasy one. That world often runs on magic, is full of mythical creatures and works by “game-like” rules, with levels, skills and status screens. Many isekai also hand their hero overwhelming power, which fans shorten to “OP MC” (overpowered main character).
Common Isekai Tropes, From Overpowered Heroes to Demon Kings
The main character gains great power or special abilities. Once transported into the fantasy world, characters develop abilities they never had in their real lives, and with every step they grow stronger, often becoming “the chosen one”.
To complete difficult missions and fight off monsters, characters usually travel in groups. These companions come from different backgrounds, from humans and elves to beastfolk and robots.
There is often a villain or rival who threatens the people of the new world, commonly an oppressive ruler such as a demon king, or a rival adventurer who builds the tension in the plot.
Characters are often stuck in the new world until they complete their main mission. In some series they can travel through a portal and live in both worlds, and many isekai add romance between the main characters.
Plenty of isekai anime are released every year, and some go on to become classics, so this list can never cover every gem. These are the fourteen we would put in front of anyone.
14. No Longer Allowed in Another World
What if Osamu Dazai, the novelist known for his deep and dark stories, was suddenly transported to a magical realm? That is the premise of the isekai anime “No Longer Allowed in Another World”, which aired from July to September 2024 and is available with an English dub.
In this satirical fantasy, Dazai lands in a world of elves, catgirls and other supernatural beings after being hit by a truck. He has no interest in saving the world. Instead, he is searching for Sacchan, the woman he had made a suicide pact with.
The series stands out for its dark humour and unconventional protagonist. Dazai, whom the other characters call Sensei, gathers unexpected allies, like Annette, the elf priestess who summoned him, and Tama, a catgirl who becomes his loyal companion. Together they navigate the dangers of this new world, often with funny and touching results.
If you want an isekai that goes against the usual narrative, this is a must-watch, and it streams on Crunchyroll. The manga is a good way to continue the story.
13. The Devil Is a Part-Timer!
The mighty Satan, ruler of the underworld, suddenly finds himself in modern Tokyo. That is the premise of “The Devil Is a Part-Timer!”, a reverse isekai where the fantasy character lands in our world.
Now going by Sadao Maou and stripped of his powers, Satan takes a job at a fast food restaurant called MgRonald’s, a parody of McDonald’s. The series stands out for its blend of humour and everyday struggles.
Season 1 aired in 2013 and introduced Chiho Sasaki, the MgRonald’s coworker with a crush on Maou. Fans waited nine years for Season 2, which aired in two parts in 2022 and 2023 and continues Maou’s life behind the counter. The light novels and manga carry the story further.
12. The Wrong Way to Use Healing Magic
Imagine being transported to a magical world by mistake, only to discover you have rare healing powers. That is the story of Usato Ken in “The Wrong Way to Use Healing Magic”.
Usato, an ordinary high school student, is caught up in a summoning meant for two classmates. His power is healing rather than fighting, so he joins the kingdom’s Rescue Team, where he trains under its strict and fearsome leader, Rose. His journey is full of brutal training, unexpected challenges and heartwarming moments as he learns to use healing magic in ways nobody expected.
The anime’s first season aired from January to March 2024, and the English dub cast gives real bite to Usato’s reluctant journey and Rose’s intense training methods. The manga adaptation is a good way to continue the story.
11. Tsukimichi: Moonlit Fantasy
Makoto Misumi, an ordinary high school student, is transported to another world, only to be called “ugly” by the goddess who summoned him and cast out to the wastelands. His luck turns as he meets demi-humans who accept him for who he is.
Season 1 aired in 2021, and Season 2 ran for 25 episodes from January to June 2024, continuing the journey of Makoto and his companions.
With bright visuals, likeable characters and big battles, Tsukimichi is one of the most fun isekai of recent years. It is based on a light novel series, has a manga adaptation, and both seasons stream on Crunchyroll.
10. Drifters

“Drifters” follows historical warriors, known as Drifters, who are transported to a fantasy world to fight in a grand conflict. These legends from different eras face supernatural enemies and the Ends, their villainous counterparts.
Anyone who knows Kouta Hirano, the creator of “Hellsing”, will recognise the over-the-top brutal style. The cast includes Oda Nobunaga, Hannibal of Carthage and other famous historical figures, which makes it a must-see for history buffs.
The 12-episode series aired in 2016. The architecture, settings and character designs are superb, and it streams on Crunchyroll.
9. The Rising of the Shield Hero
The Rising of the Shield Hero first aired in the Winter 2019 season and streams on Crunchyroll. Naofumi Iwatani, an otaku, is summoned along with three other heroes to the kingdom of Melromarc to fight the Waves of Catastrophe that are ravaging the world.
Unlike many isekai with an OP main character, Naofumi starts off weak, misunderstood and betrayed. His journey of growth, perseverance and redemption is what makes the show stand out.
Naofumi’s development from distrusted outcast to respected hero is the reason to watch, backed by rich world-building and strong animation in the battles.
The first few episodes are intentionally frustrating, a sign that this will be a darker isekai than most. It shows inequality and slavery plainly, and viewers who like a darker tone will appreciate it.
8. Saga of Tanya the Evil

Now and then an isekai shakes things up with an anti-hero as the protagonist. Saga of Tanya the Evil (Youjo Senki) follows Tanya Degurechaff, a ruthless, brilliant soldier in the body of a young girl. In her previous life, Tanya was a cold-hearted salaryman. After angering a mysterious entity known as “Being X”, she is reincarnated into a war-torn world of magic and military strategy, and fights her way up the ranks of the Imperial Army to spite him.
The series blends military warfare, dark humour and psychological depth, with thrilling action and a complex, cunning lead.
Saga of Tanya the Evil: The Movie (2019) continues the story after the first season, and Season 2 finally premiered on 8 July 2026. The light novels and manga offer even more detail for anyone who wants to go deeper.
7. Overlord
Overlord starts from a familiar idea: a player logs into a game and, for unknown reasons, gets stuck inside it. What sets it apart is that it appeals to anyone who loves playing the bad guy in RPGs.
Audiences follow Ainz Ooal Gown, the undead overlord who rules the Great Tomb of Nazarick. His loyal guardians defend the tomb against raids and intruders, and the story centres on a powerful skeleton rather than a traditional human hero.
One of the standout characters is Albedo, the devoted guardian overseer who is madly in love with Ainz. If you are looking for anime like Overlord, Re:Zero and That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime deliver similar thrills.

Mushoku Tensei: Jobless Reincarnation is the story of a jobless 34-year-old man who dies and is reincarnated as a baby in a world of magic, with a chance to live again as Rudeus Greyrat. From infancy he begins to master immense magical power, which makes him one of the strongest heroes in isekai.
Season 1 aired in 2021, Season 2 ran in two parts in 2023 and 2024, and Season 3 premiered on 4 July 2026, continuing Rudeus’ journey of growth and redemption.
What sets Mushoku Tensei apart is its focus on character growth and world-building. It is about personal redemption, love and complicated relationships as much as flashy magic, which makes it a favourite with fans looking for more than a typical isekai. The hero gets a second shot at life, and watching what he does with it is the point.
5. Sword Art Online
Sword Art Online (SAO) is one of the most popular isekai anime, set inside a virtual reality MMORPG. In 2022, thousands of players log into the game with new VR technology and discover they cannot log out. To escape, they must clear all 100 floors of Aincrad, with one deadly twist: dying in the game means dying in real life.
Instead of a traditional fantasy setting, the hero Kirito fights through a virtual world alongside thousands of other trapped players. The pacing and plot have drawn mixed reviews, but fans praise the animation and action scenes.
Beyond the TV series, SAO has expanded into games like Sword Art Online Alicization Lycoris and Sword Art Online Last Recollection, and films like Sword Art Online: Ordinal Scale and Sword Art Online Progressive: Scherzo of Deep Night.

4. No Game No Life
No Game No Life takes viewers to a world where games decide everything. Siblings Sora and Shiro, undefeated gamers from Earth, enter a realm where wars, disputes and even kingdoms are settled by high-stakes games, and every challenge demands strategy and wit.
The TV series aired in 2014 and there has been no second season. The prequel film No Game No Life: Zero (2017) fills some of the gap by exploring the history of this world.
Shows about hikikomori, or shut-ins, have a way of being intriguing. Sora and Shiro are both shut-ins and skilled gamers, and they are brought to the world of Disboard after beating the god Tet at chess.
Disboard’s rules state that no one may harm another and that all disputes must be resolved through games, which makes for a different kind of combat and shows how the characters adapt to that reality.
The smart storyline lifts it above many isekai. It focuses on the siblings’ intellect over big battle scenes and is an excellent first watch for anybody new to the genre.
3. Re:Zero

Re:Zero, Starting Life in Another World, follows Subaru Natsuki, a young man suddenly transported to a fantasy world. He has no extraordinary fighting power. Instead, he gains the ability to return from death, which lets him relive crucial moments until he gets them right, but only by dying first, often many times over.
That makes Subaru an unusual hero: an ordinary guy with one incredible, painful ability. Each death leaves a lasting mark, so the consequences feel real.
Season 3 aired from October 2024 to March 2025, and Season 4 began on 8 April 2026. What keeps fans coming back is the emotional story, intricate world-building and intense character arcs.
Re:Zero pushes its characters into such misery that their world starts to resemble hell. They simmer in guilt and fury, and every moment of happiness fades fast. That is much of the story, so if it sounds like your kind of show, Re:Zero is the one to watch.
2. KonoSuba

“KonoSuba” (Kono Subarashii Sekai ni Shukufuku wo!) won fans over with its mix of comedy and fantasy. Kazuma, an unlucky teenager, dies and is sent to a magical world. Joining him are Aqua, a useless goddess, Megumin, an explosion-obsessed mage, and Darkness, a tough but awkward crusader. Together they form a dysfunctional party that brings chaos to every quest.
KonoSuba Season 3 aired in April 2024. Aqua remains a fan favourite for her antics, and Darkness’s awkward, fearless nature adds a special dynamic to the group. The humour and characters make it stand out in the isekai world.
The KonoSuba manga gives deeper insight into the characters, and the OVA episodes add extra stories not found in the main series.
With memorable villains like Hans the deadly slime and Beldia the Dullahan, it is no wonder KonoSuba is a top pick on MyAnimeList. Whether you are new to isekai or a longtime fan, it has something for everyone.
Honourable Mention: Spirited Away (2001), a Spirit World Story Before the Isekai Boom
Released in 2001, Spirited Away shares many themes with isekai (a young girl trapped in a spirit world) and is often raised in isekai discussions, though it predates the genre boom of the 2010s. It is a cultural icon as much as an anime classic, and won the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature. Directed by Hayao Miyazaki, it tells the story of Chihiro, a young girl who stumbles into a magical world after her parents are turned into pigs. Struggling to survive, she meets the mysterious Haku, a dragon spirit, and the eerie No-Face.
Fans are drawn to its whimsical world of soot sprites, witches and spirits, and to the heart of the film: Chihiro’s fight to save her parents. Both the English dub and the original Japanese voice cast bring characters like No-Face and Haku to life.
For many viewers it was a first taste of a story where a character crosses into another world, which is why it belongs on any isekai list. In the UK it streams on Netflix.
1. That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime
That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime is our number one reincarnation anime. Satoru Mikami, an ordinary office worker, is stabbed and dies in the real world, then wakes up as a slime in a fantasy world. Named Rimuru, he gains incredible powers and quickly becomes the centre of everything around him. The series is full of adventure, world-building and action.
Rimuru’s rise from a simple slime to the ruler of a nation of monsters is one of the most satisfying arcs in modern isekai, and the whole series streams on Crunchyroll.
