Japanese Film Club celebrated its launch at The Rio Cinema with an all day event on Saturday 28 June 2025. It teamed up with Yokimono Japanese Market for a free all day Japanese food, art and crafts fair at The Factory, then screened Juzo Itami’s Tampopo at The Rio Cinema at 6:15pm. The party continued into the night at The Vortex Jazz Club, with the first Japanese Film Club beer, produced by Osaka’s Derailleur Brew Works.

Tampopo at The Rio Cinema, 6:15pm
Tampopo (1985), dir. Juzo Itami
The tale of an eccentric band of culinary ronin who guide the widow of a noodle-shop owner on her quest for the perfect recipe. This rapturous “ramen western” by Japanese director Juzo Itami is an entertaining, genre-bending adventure underpinned by a deft satire of the way social conventions distort the most natural of human urges, our appetites. Tampopo is a lavishly inclusive paean to the sensual joys of nourishment, and one of the most mouthwatering examples of food on film ever made.
Yokimono Market, The Factory
Yokimono Japanese Market was back at The Factory E8, a few minutes’ walk around the corner from The Rio Cinema in Dalston, with a curated selection of Japanese art, crafts and food. The free day market brought Japanese food and sweets, music, dance, workshops, art and crafts, vintage kimono, jewellery and more. Visitors could have an early Japanese dinner at the market, then walk over for the early evening screening of the greatest film about food ever made: Tampopo.
Japanese Film Club Disco 8:30pm: Late
Free After Party at The Vortex Jazz Club
The party continued into the evening with a Japanese disco after party, where DJ Shintaro and special guests played a visual and audio selection of 1960s, 70s, 80s and 90s Japanese disco and pop at the nearby Vortex Jazz Club.
Japanese Film Club also launched its first branded beer, made and imported from Osaka’s craft brewery Derailleur Brew Works, which was available throughout the evening events.
