Anime rock has had a strong autumn in London. LiSA played her first UK show at the Troxy in September, and SPYAIR bring a different sound to Scala: guitar riffs and big choruses from a four piece that has written themes for some of the most watched anime of the past 15 years.

SPYAIR’s first European tour in eight years ends at Scala

The tour began with a guest appearance at YuniCon, the anime convention held at Multiversum Schwechat outside Vienna, on 30 October. SPYAIR then headline Cabaret Sauvage in Paris on 2 November, the Effenaar in Eindhoven on 4 November and the Batschkapp in Frankfurt on 5 November, so London gets a band with four European nights behind them.

The European dates are promoted by the German company GoodRaht, and the London show is presented by Raku Events. SPYAIR previewed the run in June with their first show in Poland, at the Pyrkon convention in Poznań.

YOSUKE, the Fukuoka singer chosen from more than 1,000 applicants

Original vocalist IKE left SPYAIR in 2022, and the remaining members searched for his successor in public. A YouTube series launched in August 2022 followed the open audition, which drew more than 1,000 applicants. The band announced YOSUKE as their new singer on 13 April 2023, when he was 24. He comes from Fukuoka Prefecture in Kyushu.

RE-BIRTH, released on 18 March 2026, is the first full album with YOSUKE, and it collects the singles the band released after he joined. It is SPYAIR’s seventh original album and their first in five years. Speaking to Electric Bloom Webzine before the tour, YOSUKE said he hopes European audiences hear the songs he helped write alongside the older favourites.

The Haikyu!! and Gintama themes behind SPYAIR’s best known songs

Most of the crowd at Scala will know SPYAIR through anime, and Haikyu!! is the biggest link. The volleyball series sits at number one in our ranking of the best sports anime, and SPYAIR have written for it three times.

Imagination, I’m a Believer and Orange

Imagination opened the first season of Haikyu!! in 2014 and reached number nine on the Oricon weekly singles chart. The band returned in 2015 with I’m a Believer, the first opening of the second season. Orange followed in 2024 as the theme song of the film Haikyu!! The Dumpster Battle, and it is now SPYAIR’s most streamed song.

Samurai Heart, Sakura Mitsutsuki and the Gintama years

The band’s run with Gintama began in 2011 with Samurai Heart (Some Like It Hot!!), an ending theme for the second season, Gintama’. Sakura Mitsutsuki opened the series in 2013, I Wanna Be… opened the fourth season, and Wadachi was the theme of the 2021 film Gintama: The Final. Further back, Last Moment closed episodes of Bleach in 2010, the year of SPYAIR’s major label debut.

Which songs SPYAIR could play in London

No setlist has been published. UZ told Electric Bloom Webzine that all four members choose the set together, with both long time fans and newcomers in mind. The best preparation is BEST OF ANIME, released on 21 October 2026: 17 anime themes running from Last Moment to Awake, the opening of The Reincarnated Heavy Knight Who Was Exiled Cheats with Game Knowledge, with the older songs re-recorded by the current line-up.

From the Camden Underworld in 2018 to Scala in 2026

SPYAIR made their UK debut at the Camden Underworld on 21 October 2018, a stop on their first world tour, which they shared with fellow Japanese rock band ROOKiEZ is PUNK’D. IKE was still fronting the band that night, in a venue tucked under the World’s End pub, and Scala gives the return a much bigger stage.

Scala has a long history of its own. The building opened in April 1920 as the King’s Cross Cinema and reopened as a music venue in March 1999, and in the early 1970s it hosted all night rock shows that included a set by Iggy Pop. The venue’s building history tells the full story.
