Shizuku is known for penning the novel entitled Whisper of the Heart. This sets the entire plot of the story. Lofi Girl adopts the movie protagonist’s dedication to writing, as she is similarly seen to be writing on her notebook in the iconic lofi background, with scenic views and homey elements surrounding her.
The channel back then was looking for an image to represent them. Dimitri selected a GIF of Shizuku with headphones on as the face of his livestream. As the chill beats with the GIF gained wide popularity, copyright concerns emerged. Left with no choice, ChilledCow decided to create a new image. Further, the Lofi girl as we know it first appeared in September 2017 when the channel put out a call for artists to create an image of “a student busy revising for her classes with Miyazaki-esque visuals”.
Designed by artist Juan Pablo Machaca, Lofi Girl is depicted as a girl studying. In what looks like Lyon, France, often seen wearing headphones and surrounded by an array of books and plants as well as her orange cat peering outside. The animated loop of Lofi Girl, created for the livestream, has become a cultural touchstone.

Fans were relieved to find that the disappearance wasn’t permanent, and with it came Lofi Girl’s companion, or an alternative to Lofi Boy: the Synth Boy! He currently serves as the face of the channel “synthwave radio – beats to chill/game to.”
