Taking inspiration from Japan’s many Shōtengai (local market streets) and their capacity for serving as community centres and gathering spaces, Coal Drops Yard will be hosting a Shōtengai Japanese Market for three consecutive weekends, curated by BEAMS & CO as part of Lower Stable Street Market on 24/25 July, 31 July/1 August, and 7/8 August.

Watch the Tokyo Olympics

Running concurrently with the Tokyo Olympics, the market will consist of ten stalls curated by BEAMS & CO alongside 10 stalls from the regular Lower Stable Street market line-up.

Date/Time

Saturday 24th July / Sunday 25th July 12-6 PM

Saturday 31st July / Sunday 1st August 12-6 PM

Saturday 7th August / Sunday 8th August 12-6 PM

Address

Lower Stable Street and Stable Street, Coal Drops Yard, N1C 4DR

Exploring Shōtengai

Like most Shōtengai in Japanese cities, a wide range of goods will be available. There will be homewares from Native & Co, artisan Japanese bread from Rise Bakery and Bar (the sister bakery to Happy Sky Bakery), and a range of posters from Problem Press, to name just a few.

The market will be so much more than just an opportunity for commerce, however, as it will focus on building bonds between businesses and with the larger London community as a whole.

Japanese fashion photographer Mika Ninagawa

Recent work from the acclaimed fashion photographer and director Mika Ninagawa will also be exhibited on-site. Entitled Beauty and Power, Ninagawa’s photographs of Japanese Para athletes radiate positivity and colour. Displayed using lightboxes, the works are sure to brighten up the walls of Lower Stable Street.
