For the opening of AKIRA, the camera pans up to reveal an aerial picture of Tokyo. The background title »1988.7.16 TOKYO« marks the beginning of the story and the film’s Japanese premiere.

Shinjuku’s towers are centred in the shot. Mitaka City, behind Shinjuku, releases a mysterious power. The atomic bomb illuminates the entire city and then sweeps toward the audience, filling the frame.

Description

Although this is the first cut of the film, the background was drawn as the last piece of the production by art director Toshiharu Mizutani. Takashi Watabe, one of the most prolific concepts and layout designers, prepared the layout.

Usually, the layout drawing would be transferred to the background paper but, because time was running out, Mizutani painted directly on the layout. The remaining details of Watabe’s pencil drawing can still be seen in the outer areas of the coloured background. It took the art director two and a half days and nights to finish this oversized piece.

Riekeles Gallery was established in 2021 by Stefan Riekeles to offer high-end reproductions of anime artwork.

Riekeles Gallery works closely with Eizo Workshop in Japan, an organisation specialising in archiving and presenting media art, film and photography. Eizo Workshop was founded by Noriyuki Kimura (artist, video producer) and Hiroko Myokam (curator, media art researcher) in 2018.

 

Who is Stefan Riekeles?

Stefan Riekeles is a passionate lover of animation background art. He is the author of “Anime Architecture” (Thames & Hudson, 2020) and “Proto Anime Cut Archive” (Kehrer, 2011).

A dense network fostered by personal contacts with artists, producers and licencing partners enables Stefan to offer exclusive collectables and behind-the-scene insights into the anime industry.

 

Why reproductions?

A signed print is the only way you will know for sure whose work you are collecting. Cels and other artwork available on the secondary market are usually not signed nor approved by their authors and there is only a small chance of ever finding out.

All reproductions offered by Riekeles Gallery meet the highest standards and are given final approval by the artists who created the work.

In doing so, we strive to provide a direct link between anime creators and the collectors of their work.

Shipping & Returns Policy

Shipping Policy

All domestic orders to residences and businesses will be sent via DHL. International orders will be sent via DHL Priority. We reserve the right to delay or hold orders with inappropriate shipping selections (i.e., "domestic vs. international").

 

Handling Time

Orders are normally dispatched within 3 days of the order being received.

Any international import taxes and duties are the responsibility of the buyer.

Shipping and Insurance

The goods are insured during transport against theft and accidental damage. Once you have taken your delivery receipt and confirmed it by your signature, the insurance cover expires.

 

Customs duties and taxes

No additional taxes or customs duties are charged for articles that are shipped within the European Union. The articles’ prices and shipping costs include VAT and are thus listed as gross prices.

In the case of shipments that are made to non-European countries, no VAT is charged. As soon as the articles arrive at the destination, sales tax on imports as well as customs duties and handling costs will be determined by the respective customs office and may delay the delivery of the articles. All customs duties and import taxes shall be beared by the consumer.

Refund Policy

If you withdraw from your order, we shall reimburse you all payments received from you, including the costs of delivery (with the exception of the supplementary costs resulting from your choice of a type of delivery other than the least expensive type of standard delivery offered by us), without undue delay and in any event not later than 14 days from the day on which we are informed about your decision to withdraw from this contract.

We will carry out such reimbursement using the same means of payment as you used for the initial transaction unless you have expressly agreed otherwise; in any event, you will not incur any fees as a result of such reimbursement.

We will withhold reimbursement until we have received the goods back or you have supplied evidence of having sent back the goods, whichever is the earliest. 

Cancellation / Return / Exchange Policy

Right of Withdrawal

You have the right to withdraw from this contract within 14 days without giving any reason. The withdrawal period will expire after 14 days from the day on which you acquire, or a third party other than the carrier and indicated by you acquires, physical possession of the last good. To exercise the right of withdrawal, email [email protected] of your decision to withdraw

To meet the withdrawal deadline, it is sufficient for you to send your communication concerning your exercise of the right of withdrawal before the withdrawal period has expired

 

Returns

You shall send back the goods or hand them over to us without undue delay and in any event, no later than 14 days from the day on which you communicate your withdrawal from this contract to us, The deadline is met if you send back the goods before the period of 14 days has expired. You will have to bear the direct cost of returning the goods.

You are only liable for any diminished value of the goods resulting from the handling other than what is necessary to establish the nature, characteristics and functioning of the goods.
